ONU Social Media Workshop 2023

On March 24, I attended the 2023 ONU Social Media Workshop. There were plenty of interesting speakers to listen to, so I will give you all the main points of these presentations that I found stuck with me. The first speaker was a man by the name of Steven Miller. He graduated from ONU with a political science degree, but now works at Disney World with the marketing team. He instructed us all to be open to any possibility and to continue saying yes to all good opportunities being given to us. He writes the Disney Parks blog and through this experience realized that if you start writing something, you can always edit it later. From this presentation I learned to have hope, use my emotions to convey experiences to others, and most importantly to be authentic. His speech was truly inspiring, but I expected nothing less, coming from an employee of one of the most magical places in the world! The second presentation was done by two employees of Airstream. From this presentation, I learne...

My Birthday Weekend Recap

My birthday was March 21, which was a Tuesday. The week prior was Spring break, so I decided to go to Kentucky for a weekend trip with my boyfriend! The first part of our trip was in Loretto, Kentucky. We drove about 6 hours, after waking up at 7:00 in the morning. We finally made it to our destination, where we were able to get a tour of Maker’s Mark bourbon distillery. As soon as we got there, I was in awe of how green the landscape was and how many cows and horses I saw grazing in the fields. I even saw baby lambs! Attached below is a wonderful view of the grounds. We got a full explanation of how bourbon is made. It starts with a mix of grains (corn, barley and rye). The mixture must be made up of at least 51% corn. This mixture of grains gets yeast and water added to it and then gets placed in a vat to let the yeast do its job (fermentation). Once it’s ready, it gets strained and then distilled (meaning it gets purified by heating and vaporizing). The next step varies between...

A Couple Days in Pittsburgh

This past weekend I went to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with Beta Alpha Psi (the accounting service fraternity I’m involved in). We had 3 separate groups within our organization go, and my group had 4 people, including me. My group presented in the Best Practices competition, in the collaboration and leadership section. Our topic was our presentation on campus a week prior, on the tax implications of NIL deals. These deals are becoming more prevalent as they are “name, image and likeness” brand deals based on the skills of the student athlete. To start off the day, we got up early in the morning and left by 7:30 a.m. It was a 4-hour drive to Pittsburgh and once we arrived, there were various lectures and introductions. We could then pick some of the presentations we wanted to attend, and I decided on one about public accounting myths/truths and the other was on imposter syndrome.  We also had to complete a fraud activity, which involved finding outstanding checks that weren’t paid and...

Snapchat: The Underrated Social Media Marketing Platform

I grew up using Snapchat. The ease of use and new ways to communicate made it almost more popular to use than texting in my high school. For those of you who may not know, it gives you the option to take a picture or video and send it to one person or whole group of people. It’s free of charge to send messages, which some find more appealing because all you need is to be connected to Wi-Fi or data. You can also chat and video call. Many people share pictures on their story (all your followers can see those) and some even share on the public story for the area they live in. Snapchat has “spotlight” reels as well, which mimic TikTok but are less user friendly. Finally, Snapchat has a feature called “Snap Maps” where users can see where everyone is that shares their location with them. Influencers on Snapchat tend to have a yellow star by their name and in order to keep a solid presence, they post virtually their entire day on Snapchat. Some will post video or picture testimonials to sell...

Debunking Twitter

Hi everyone! Keeping up with the theme of informing you all about what I’ve been learning in my class’s textbook, I will be writing this blog about the innerworkings of Twitter’s algorithm, format and how I feel about the usability of this form of social media. I had Twitter my senior year of high school to keep up with sports events in the high school I went to and my friends. I didn’t follow any businesses. I deleted it and recently redownloaded it 3 years later to see if anything had changed and it hadn’t too much. According to the textbook, “Essentials of Social Media Marketing” the algorithm relies on ranking signals such as recency of the tweet, relevancy (involving keywords), engagement (likes, comments, retweets), the number of followers of the user and location relative to the specific user. Most tweets I’ve seen on my feed were from those I follow, from where my hometown is and those accounts that many people follow (like Elon Musk). Now that I’ve downloaded Twitter again, I’...

A Rundown of Accounting and My Future Career

I’m a senior accounting major and have not always liked accounting. I knew I wanted to major in something easy and that paid a lot, but didn’t do much research on what possible career paths could be from accounting or how many different opportunities were available to me as a business major. I originally thought accounting was keeping track of business transactions or doing taxes and after my first accounting class I almost changed my major. Accounting was not as easy as I expected and that discouraged me. However, I survived all four years of college and can safely say I have a better understanding of what I want to do for the rest of my life. I started off taking classes in college that taught me about software such as Quickbooks and SAP, managerial accounting (with an emphasis on manufacturing companies), financial accounting, auditing and most recently tax. My professors were very proactive in answering my questions and pushing me to get an internship to help narrow down what sec...
