The Music I Listen To

I grew up listening to music. My parents and grandparents always had Christian, 80s, Irish and Elvis Presley playing. They had music playing while making dinner, cleaning and even while we just hung out around the house. I started playing the piano in 5th grade for my church and I started playing clarinet in my school band in 6th grade. I would have to say that playing instruments gave me a lot more respect for those that play instruments and sing for a living, it’s not easy. As for my personal preference of music growing up, I listened to 2000s pop, Christian and the collection of songs that my parents listened to that I enjoyed. I had a pop phase in the 2010s and then an alternative and indie phase when I was a senior in high school until I was a sophomore in college. Junior and senior year of college I listened to alternative rock, 80s rock and most recently phonk. For those of you who don’t know, phonk originated from Memphis in the 1990s. Now that I am about to graduate college, I will listen to music of all genres, but I prefer music that’s upbeat, has lyrics that are fun to sing and have major bass.

Throughout my life I have had a wide variety of music that I enjoyed. However, there are a couple of artists who I’ve loved to listen to for a long time and don’t think I’ll ever get bored of:

 1. Taylor Swift: She is a classic. I’ve liked her since she released her debut album and based on the number of fans she has; many people agree with me. My favorite albums of hers are Speak Now and Reputation. I’d say a great majority of her songs are fun to sing along to and are extremely catchy. My friends and I all love Taylor Swift and we are at the point where if someone says something that sounds like a Taylor Swift lyric, we will all start singing.

2. The Neighbourhood: I first discovered this band from their hit song, “Sweater Weather”. The Neighbourhood’s songs are very melancholy and make you think. Their genre is alternative rock, which means that some songs are chill, but others have nice guitar solos, heavy drums and bass. I would like to learn how to play a couple of their songs on the piano.

 3. Lana del Rey: She is another melancholy artist I like. Lana del Rey puts a lot of emotion in her songs, so much so that you wonder if she’s singing about her real-life experiences or just a story she came up with. She has a nice voice that is easy to listen to, but some of her songs are extremely slow which some people don’t like.

4. Glass Animals: This band is extremely upbeat and catchy. They use a bunch of unique sounds to differentiate their sound from pop songs that all sound the same. I like to try to find hidden meaning in their songs, especially because they have a lot of different lyrics that don’t make total sense at first.

3 Places I Want to Visit

I love traveling. I think it’s so fun to learn about how people live in different parts of the world and even other places in the US. Today, I’ll be telling you all about 3 places I want to visit in the near future. The first place I want to visit is Salzburg, Austria. This is number one on my bucket list. My grandma, who has since passed away grew up in this beautiful city and moved to America after WW2 because she fell in love with an American soldier from Kentucky. I’d like to visit the birthplace of Mozart, the Salzburg Cathedral, check out the coffee shops/boutiques and take pictures of the beautiful mountains. The picture I’ve attached below is the Bavarian mountains surrounding Salzburg. The second place I would like to visit is Sa...

My Favorite Foods

There are many foods I enjoy and for this blog post I’m going to try to rank my top five. I love going out to restaurants and trying new foods, but these food combinations are tried and true. Thai Fried Rice: This food is heavenly. I could eat Thai fried rice every week for the rest of my life and not get sick of it. This is hands down my favorite food of all time. I used to enjoy Chinese fried rice until I tasted Thai. I think it has to do with the seasonings and spices they put in it. I always get my Thai fried rice with chicken because I’m allergic to shrimp. I’m getting allergy tested the second week of June to see if I outgrew my allergy and if I did, I might have a new variation of fried rice to try. Thai Jasmine in Lima, Ohio is my favorite Thai restaurant ever, it’s a must visit.       Steak, mashed potatoes, and green beans: This is a classic combination. You can get it at any steakhouse, but my favorite place to get it is at my house. My dad uses a propane grill...

Debunking Twitter

Hi everyone! Keeping up with the theme of informing you all about what I’ve been learning in my class’s textbook, I will be writing this blog about the innerworkings of Twitter’s algorithm, format and how I feel about the usability of this form of social media. I had Twitter my senior year of high school to keep up with sports events in the high school I went to and my friends. I didn’t follow any businesses. I deleted it and recently redownloaded it 3 years later to see if anything had changed and it hadn’t too much. According to the textbook, “Essentials of Social Media Marketing” the algorithm relies on ranking signals such as recency of the tweet, relevancy (involving keywords), engagement (likes, comments, retweets), the number of followers of the user and location relative to the specific user. Most tweets I’ve seen on my feed were from those I follow, from where my hometown is and those accounts that many people follow (like Elon Musk). Now that I’ve downloaded Twitter again, I’...
