The Music I Listen To

I grew up listening to music. My parents and grandparents always had Christian, 80s, Irish and Elvis Presley playing. They had music playing while making dinner, cleaning and even while we just hung out around the house. I started playing the piano in 5 th grade for my church and I started playing clarinet in my school band in 6 th grade. I would have to say that playing instruments gave me a lot more respect for those that play instruments and sing for a living, it’s not easy. As for my personal preference of music growing up, I listened to 2000s pop, Christian and the collection of songs that my parents listened to that I enjoyed. I had a pop phase in the 2010s and then an alternative and indie phase when I was a senior in high school until I was a sophomore in college. Junior and senior year of college I listened to alternative rock, 80s rock and most recently phonk. For those of you who don’t know, phonk originated from Memphis in the 1990s. Now that I am about to graduate colleg...

TikTok: My Journey

I first downloaded TikTok when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and sent all of us college students home in March of 2020. I was pretty bored and tired of scrolling on Instagram and Snapchat when I decided to download it. It took me a while to have a “for you” page that was actually tailored to me, but once that happened I’d was on TikTok all the time. I learned a bunch of trending TikTok dances during quarantine but didn’t post any. When we all returned back to college in the fall, I soon realized that TikTok was taking up too much of my time. I would be on it for 3 hours every night and then go hang out with friends, leaving no time for me to do my homework. I ended up having to delete the app because I had so much to do. I redownloaded it this past summer because I assumed I would have less to do as a senior. However, it turned out that I’m actually a little better at managing my time now. I only average about 1 hour and 20 minutes a day and can balance my classes with my internshi...

My Review on the Social Dilemma

This past week in class we watched a movie on Netflix called the Social Dilemma. This movie illustrated how dangerous our addiction to technology and social media is. One scene that really stood out to me was when the mother in the movie told her family that they should all put their smartphones in a locked box for one hour while they ate dinner. Halfway through dinner, the daughter took a hammer and shattered the lockbox because she couldn’t bear to be without her phone. To be honest, that’s extremely pathetic that she couldn’t go without her phone for one hour to talk to her family at dinner. This movie also emphasized that we are “the product” the Big Tech companies are selling. Social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and so many more collect our data to find out what we enjoy engaging with and sell that information to advertising companies, so they can better tailor ads to us. This is not limited to social media companies, Google and even Netflix are guilty of the same th...

6 of My Favorite Hobbies

This week I would like to tell you all about what I do in my free time. I wouldn’t say I’m a very active person, but I am always looking for something to do. I’ve narrowed it down to six activities. 1.  Sleeping . While this hobby might seem like a necessity, this is hands down one of my favorite things to do. Honestly, a little sleep can fix any situation. Studies show that adults need at least 7 hours of sleep per night. I function best after 9. Also, a short nap during the day (20-30 mins) can help beat the midafternoon slump. If I don’t have time to fall asleep during the day, I will still rest in my bed for a while, scrolling through social media and watching TikToks. 2.  Traveling. As I’ve previously mentioned in one of my blogs, I love traveling. It’s so nice to take a break from work and school. I enjoy investigating a new area, trying new restaurants, shopping at new boutiques, and looking at the scenery of the place I’m vacationing at. My favorite places I’ve been a...

How to Use YouTube to Your Advantage

Did you know? The YouTube video, “Baby Shark Dance” had over 10.4 billion views. If you think about it, there’s approximately 7.9 billion people in the world, so that means most YouTube users have seen this video. (The reason there’s more views than people in the world is because many people have played it multiple times.) This statistic alone testifies to how many people are actively using this app. YouTube is extremely influential, you can find videos that families have posted of memories, food and craft tutorials, music and so much more. Many companies have joined YouTube to give a fresh perspective on what their company has to offer and to make them more relatable. Our class textbook, Essentials of Social Media Marketing, by Michelle Charello gives an outline of a good content strategy for YouTube. First, include a channel trailer to essentially introduce your product/service to potential customers. Second, experiment with different types of video content such as inspiratio...

How to Market on LinkedIn

LinkedIn’s users are primarily business professionals and those in college searching for a full-time job. Connecting with people on LinkedIn is an easy way to stay in touch and find out more information on what others do for work. Many businesses have LinkedIn pages and job recruiters frequently message those they think would be a good fit for the company. I use LinkedIn to share my achievements, skills, activities, and prior work experience. I get contacted by recruiters often urging me to apply for various jobs. I’m connected not only with fellow college students, but those I have worked with at Rea and Associates and business professionals that have accounting experience in the greater Cleveland area (where I am from). I’ve reached out to many asking for insight on navigating the job search in the accounting world and have found that many are quick to reply and offer advice. I get ads for accounting firms, companies in my area and even data analytics software programs. These...
