A Little Bit About Me

Hi everyone! My name is Hannah Elkins and I am a senior accounting major attending Ohio Northern University, with a minor in marketing and management. I have three younger brothers, one is attending Ohio Northern as well. In high school I ran track and cross country and was on the dance team for 2 years. I have dance experience in ballet, tap, jazz and hip hop. I can also play the piano and clarinet. Now that I'm in college, I'm involved in Beta Alpha Psi (an accounting service fraternity), am a peer mentor/course assistant for freshman business students and recently joined our American Marketing Association group on campus.

With this blog, I'm hoping to give you all a glimpse into my life and things I'm passionate about. In addition I will also be writing about social media marketing. My hobbies consist of shopping, hiking and trying new restaurants, so you can expect blogs on these topics as well. I'm excited to get started writing, I hope you all will join me on this journey!

The Music I Listen To

I grew up listening to music. My parents and grandparents always had Christian, 80s, Irish and Elvis Presley playing. They had music playing while making dinner, cleaning and even while we just hung out around the house. I started playing the piano in 5 th grade for my church and I started playing clarinet in my school band in 6 th grade. I would have to say that playing instruments gave me a lot more respect for those that play instruments and sing for a living, it’s not easy. As for my personal preference of music growing up, I listened to 2000s pop, Christian and the collection of songs that my parents listened to that I enjoyed. I had a pop phase in the 2010s and then an alternative and indie phase when I was a senior in high school until I was a sophomore in college. Junior and senior year of college I listened to alternative rock, 80s rock and most recently phonk. For those of you who don’t know, phonk originated from Memphis in the 1990s. Now that I am about to graduate colleg...

Debunking Twitter

Hi everyone! Keeping up with the theme of informing you all about what I’ve been learning in my class’s textbook, I will be writing this blog about the innerworkings of Twitter’s algorithm, format and how I feel about the usability of this form of social media. I had Twitter my senior year of high school to keep up with sports events in the high school I went to and my friends. I didn’t follow any businesses. I deleted it and recently redownloaded it 3 years later to see if anything had changed and it hadn’t too much. According to the textbook, “Essentials of Social Media Marketing” the algorithm relies on ranking signals such as recency of the tweet, relevancy (involving keywords), engagement (likes, comments, retweets), the number of followers of the user and location relative to the specific user. Most tweets I’ve seen on my feed were from those I follow, from where my hometown is and those accounts that many people follow (like Elon Musk). Now that I’ve downloaded Twitter again, I’...

My Birthday Weekend Recap

My birthday was March 21, which was a Tuesday. The week prior was Spring break, so I decided to go to Kentucky for a weekend trip with my boyfriend! The first part of our trip was in Loretto, Kentucky. We drove about 6 hours, after waking up at 7:00 in the morning. We finally made it to our destination, where we were able to get a tour of Maker’s Mark bourbon distillery. As soon as we got there, I was in awe of how green the landscape was and how many cows and horses I saw grazing in the fields. I even saw baby lambs! Attached below is a wonderful view of the grounds. We got a full explanation of how bourbon is made. It starts with a mix of grains (corn, barley and rye). The mixture must be made up of at least 51% corn. This mixture of grains gets yeast and water added to it and then gets placed in a vat to let the yeast do its job (fermentation). Once it’s ready, it gets strained and then distilled (meaning it gets purified by heating and vaporizing). The next step varies between...
